A jihadist group carried out a new terrorist attack against Togo in the early morning of Thursday, 16th june. The attack was recorded between Gnoaga and Gouloungoussi in the far north of the country.
This new attack which took place in the horn in the north of the country started at 3 am in the canton of Gnoaga and Gouloungoussi. This is the border shared by Togo, Ghana and Burkina Faso.
According to informations, the shooting lasted 3 hours between 03:00 and 06:00 in the morning. The terrorists eventually fled. Currently the whole area is patrolled by the Togolese army.
Currently, it is not possible to have all the details of the attack. But some informations indicate that no damage is reported on the side of Togo.
This new jihadist incursion is recorded while the murderous one of May 11 is still vivid in the memories. The Kpekpakandi attack left 8 dead and 13 injured in the ranks of the Togolese armed forces (FAT) at the time.
This is the third time that Togo has been targeted by terrorists. On the night of November 9th to 10th, 2021, a first attack attempt was vigorously repelled by the soldiers at Sanloaga.
Terrorist attack and state of emergency
The Togolese government also set up a state of security emergency on Monday in the savannah region. A draft decree was examined and adopted Monday in the Council of Ministers.
The decree is issued by the government with the aim of creating an environment and conditions conducive to the administrative and operational measures necessary for the proper conduct of military operations, the maintenance of order and security in this region.
This decision, which covers the savannah region, should be implemented in a spirit of frank collaboration and good understanding with the populations. It will also be able to act even more effectively in the region.
